Quick answer · Health

Can a bulldog exercise in summer?

Yes, but during cool hours, for less time and at a slower pace, with water and continuous breathing checks. Postpone walks in heat or high humidity; laboured breathing, weakness or failure to cool are emergencies.

Plan before going outside

  • Choose a cool morning or evening and a short, familiar route.
  • Check humidity and hot pavement as well as the air temperature.
  • Carry water, use a comfortable harness and stay close to shade or an indoor space.
  • Do not combine heat with running, hard play or a long journey in a stuffy car.

Watch the dog, not the distance

A familiar route can become too much on a warm or humid day. Turn back early if breathing becomes louder, the dog slows down, seeks shade or does not want to continue. Do not make a bulldog “build stamina” in hot weather.

When emergency help is needed

Laboured breathing, disorientation, an unsteady gait, vomiting, very red or blue gums, weakness or collapse require an immediate call to a clinic. Move the dog to a cool, ventilated place and follow the veterinarian’s instructions on the way.
