Collect useful facts before the visit
Photograph the same area in similar light. This helps show change over time, but does not replace examination and skin testing.
- Where the dog scratches, licks or chews.
- When it began and whether it is seasonal.
- Which foods, treats, supplements and grooming products are used.
- Dates and names of flea and other parasite preventives.
Do not change everything at once
Changing food, shampoo, supplements and household products at once makes the result impossible to interpret. A food-elimination trial follows a precise veterinary plan; random “hypoallergenic” food or extra treats make it unreliable.
When not to wait
Facial swelling, breathing difficulty, a rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, wet wounds, pus, weakness or fever require urgent advice. Do not give human antihistamines or steroids without specific veterinary instructions.
