Eye problems can worsen quickly

The large, exposed eyes of brachycephalic dogs are more prone to injury and drying. Squinting usually signals pain even when redness looks mild. A corneal ulcer cannot be reliably confirmed or ruled out from a photograph, so a clinical examination is needed.

What to do before the appointment

• Call the clinic the same day and describe the signs.
• Prevent the dog from rubbing the eye with a paw or against furniture; use a protective collar if needed.
• Do not use human drops, old drops or medicine prescribed for another animal.
• Bring the names of anything that has already been put into the eye.

When to seek emergency care
