Why the risk is higher
A heavy front end, short limbs and brachycephalic anatomy can make it difficult to keep the head above water and recover breathing. Even a shallow pool is dangerous if the dog cannot find the steps or panics.
Rules around water
- An adult stays within arm’s reach.
- The life jacket supports the chest and has a handle on top.
- Show the dog the exit before any play.
- In hot weather, water play does not replace cooling and breathing monitoring.
After a dangerous incident
If the dog inhaled water, coughs, breathes faster or harder, becomes weak or has blue gums, seek emergency care. Even if the dog appears to improve, a veterinarian should assess the airway and lungs.
