Healthy weight: look beyond the number

Ideal weight is individual. Track changes, feel the ribs and assess the waist with your veterinarian using a body condition score.

Assess body shape

On the WSAVA nine-point scale, 4–5 out of 9 is generally ideal. Ribs should be easy to feel beneath a light fat covering and a waist should be visible from above. Bulldogs are compact, so learn the assessment with your veterinarian first.

Weigh and record

  • Weigh a puppy regularly under similar conditions.
  • Count treats as part of the daily food allowance.
  • Review the portion with your veterinarian after a change in activity, diet or neutering.

Weight also affects breathing

Excess weight adds joint load and can worsen breathing in dogs with BOAS. Do not sharply restrict food: agree a safe pace and target weight individually.
