Teach touch before brushing
- Lift a lip for one second, reward and release.
- Touch the outer tooth surface with a finger or soft pad.
- Show the brush and allow a taste of veterinary toothpaste.
- Add a few strokes and finish before resistance.
Use the right tools
Choose a soft correctly sized brush and toothpaste made for dogs. Human toothpaste is not suitable. Focus on the outer tooth surfaces along the gumline where plaque collects.
Signs of dental pain
- Persistent bad breath and bleeding gums.
- Dropping food or chewing on one side.
- Avoiding firm food, toys or facial touch.
- Facial swelling or a broken or mobile tooth.
Professional treatment needs to be complete
Cleaning only the visible tooth while awake does not permit a complete examination, dental radiographs or treatment below the gumline. For a bulldog, anaesthesia should be planned individually with the airway in mind.
