What to check in good light
- The skin colour on both sides of the fold.
- Moisture, discharge, crusts, cracks or hair loss.
- Unusual odour and the response to gentle touch.
- Similar changes around the lips, tail, vulva or eyes.
A safe basic response
If the skin is intact, remove surface moisture with a soft dry pad. Do not scrub or try to clean deep into the fold. Photograph the area in consistent light so that changes can be compared.
What not to apply at random
- Human creams, essential oils or fragranced wipes.
- Antibiotic, antifungal or steroid products without a diagnosis.
- Harsh antiseptics near eyes or mucous membranes.
When a veterinarian is needed
Odour, pain, pus, blood, ulceration, swelling or rapid spread require an examination. Recurrent flares may relate to fold conformation, friction, allergy or infection, so the cause matters more than repeatedly masking the symptom.
