What to check at home

Every few days, look at both ears and compare them. Notice odour, skin colour, the amount of discharge and the dog’s response to touch. This brief check is more useful than cleaning on a schedule when the ear is already clean.

How to clean safely

• Use only a product agreed with your veterinarian.
• Do not push cotton buds deep into the ear canal.
• After bathing, gently dry the outer ear.
• If there is pain or heavy discharge, do not clean before the examination unless the clinic advises it.

Why leftover drops are risky

Similar signs can have different causes, and the eardrum cannot be assessed at home. Leftover medicine may hide the problem or be unsafe. Recurrent episodes need an underlying-cause investigation, including possible allergy, rather than repeated removal of discharge alone.
