Puppy sleep and a calm daily routine

Puppies sleep a great deal, tire quickly and may become mouthy or frantic when overtired. A simple, predictable rhythm helps a puppy settle into the new home.

Rest does not need to be earned

After food, toileting, a short play session or a new experience, offer a quiet place to rest. Children should understand that a sleeping puppy is not woken or picked up. Constant entertainment does not speed up settling in; it overloads the nervous system.

A workable daily rhythm

There is no need to live by a stopwatch. The sequence matters more than a perfect time. Introduce changes gradually, especially during the first days after homecoming.

  • Wake, toilet, water and a calm meal.
  • A few minutes of play or training, followed by rest.
  • A toilet opportunity after sleep, meals, activity and before the night.
  • Less noise, light and energetic play in the evening.

When restlessness may be more than settling in

Do not dismiss prolonged restlessness as personality if it comes with laboured breathing at rest, coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain, refusing water or unusual weakness. Record a short video and contact a veterinary clinic.
