Teach calm face handling
First touch the cheek, lift the lip for a second and reward. Then let the dog lick dog toothpaste from the brush. Increase duration only while the dog stays relaxed.
The home routine
- Use a soft brush of the right size and toothpaste made for dogs.
- Start with the outside of a few teeth and build up gradually.
- Bad breath, bleeding, pain, a broken tooth or refusing food need examination.
A bone does not replace a toothbrush
WSAVA does not recommend relying on bones to prevent periodontal disease: they can fracture teeth and cause injury or obstruction. Choose home-care products with your veterinarian.
