Practise before a long journey
Begin with a few minutes in a stationary cool car, then make a very short trip home. Finish before panic or nausea develops. If motion sickness is recurrent, discuss it with a veterinarian in advance.
A safe place in the vehicle
- A secured correctly sized carrier or a vehicle restraint harness.
- Not a front seat in front of an active airbag.
- Non-slip bedding and an unobstructed flow of cool air.
- An ID tag, microchip and lead attached before doors open.
Temperature matters more than the season
A cabin heats rapidly even on a mild day. Never leave a bulldog in a parked vehicle. Air conditioning and ventilation should be working before boarding, and direct sun through glass should not fall on the dog.
Travel kit
- Water, a bowl, towel and the familiar food.
- Records, clinic contacts along the route and prescribed medication.
- A spare harness, lead, waste bags and cleaning supplies.
