Flying with a bulldog: decide before buying a ticket

Rules for brachycephalic breeds vary between airlines and routes. Get written carrier confirmation and a fit-to-travel assessment before buying a ticket.

Before booking

  • Give the airline the exact breed, age, dog weight and carrier dimensions.
  • Get written rules for the exact flight and every connecting segment.
  • Discuss breathing, temperature, stress and fitness to fly with a veterinarian.
  • Prepare an alternative route in case the carrier changes its conditions.

Carrier and ventilation

The dog must be able to stand naturally, turn and lie down. Ventilation openings must remain clear. Build positive carrier familiarity at home rather than introducing it at the airport.

Do not sedate on your own

IATA advises against tranquilisation for air transport unless medically necessary. For a brachycephalic dog, any medicine and breathing risk must be discussed with a veterinarian.
