Check the fit
- Straps do not cross the throat or cut behind the front legs.
- The dog can walk, sit and lie down freely.
- The harness does not twist and the dog cannot reverse out of it.
- There is no redness or damp rubbing after the walk.
Teach the equipment indoors
Show the harness, reward calm interest, touch it to the shoulder and only then put it on for a few seconds. On lead, reward movement beside you with a loose line. Jerking and forceful pulling are inappropriate, especially for a dog with breathing difficulty.
Finish before exhaustion
Walk during cooler hours, carry water and plan short pauses. Increasing breathing noise, a broad tongue, lagging behind, seeking shade or refusing to continue means the effort is already too high.
