A bulldog learns through trust

Short sessions, clear rewards and consistent rules work better than pressure. “Stubbornness” is often tiredness, an unclear task or weak motivation.

Start with everyday skills

  • Calmly put on a harness and walk through a doorway.
  • Respond to a name, release an object and wait by the bowl.
  • Allow folds, paws, ears and teeth to be examined.

Teach in small steps

Ask for one simple action, reward success immediately and stop before the dog loses interest. Three minutes several times a day is often more useful than one long session.

No fear or pain

AVSAB recommends reward-based methods. Jerks, choke collars, electronic collars and physical punishment do not explain the desired behaviour and can worsen fear and conflict.
